Judge's Statement

To say this was a challenging show to judge would be an understatement. I was impressed by the consistency of quality of the entire show and could easily have presented more awards.

As a judge, I look for a sense that the artist is confident in what they want to say. Composition is the first thing to catch my eye; elements that are well placed and have balance; a focal point; variation and repetition; in other words, strong design. Technical proficiency matters, but strong design is more important. No matter the subject matter, whether the approach is realistic, interpretive, or abstract, an artist should bring his or her own unique point of view to it.

It has been a pleasure judge this exhibit and to see the level of quality of the West Virginia Watercolor Society. -- Lynn Ferris, 2011

Best of Show
Rita Montrosse, Princeton
"Whimsical Connection"

Judges's Comments: The strength of the design caught my eye immediately
and pulled me in. The intricacy of design kept me looking. This painting
has excellent balance as well as good color shifts from pure to neutral,
transparent to opaque. The line work adds extra visual interest.

Award of Excellence
Linda J.C. Turner, Jane Lew
"Goat Herd at Santa Andrea II"

Judge's Comments: Wonderful use of the white of the paper. The artist
has created a strong focal point without letting it become a “bull’s-eye”.
Your eye moves well around the page. The juxtaposition of warm/cool
colors and negative/positive space work well.

Award of Merit
Sandra T. Pealer, Rangley, Maine
"Amber Pears on Silk"

Judge's Comments: Rich use of color, space and line have turned what
could have been a mundane subject matter into a compelling work of art.

Honorable Mention
Linda Elmer, Fairmont
"Moving Manhattan"

Judge's Comments: A confident, interpretive, well designed painting.
What the artist has chosen to leave to the imagination is as important
as what is included. Good use of color and shape.
