Mary Kay Brown Barnes

Growing up on a small dairy farm in Morgantown West Virginia, I had the good fortune of being surrounded by family that valued and nurtured creativity. I learned how to draw at an early age. Watercolor, pen and ink have been my chosen mediums for thirty plus years.

Early introduction to artists like Henri Rousseau, Peter Max and Toulouse Lautrec, led
me in the direction of more graphic use of the watercolor medium. Though I never use
gouache or whites in my watercolors, I do tend toward a deeper, darker, brighter color in my paintings.

I spend a lot of time in Florida and the tropic sun literally, makes you see things in a
whole new light. I celebrate the magic of the light photon, magnified color and my love of nature in my paintings, unapologetically and with great joy.

I am a Signature Member of the WVWS, a juried artist of Tamarack, the Best of West
Virginia. I am also a lifetime member of the Morgantown Art Association and a Certified Zentangle Teacher. I enjoy teaching watercolor, drawing and Zentangle.

Some of my work, including my series of Shakespeare characters, can be viewed at
